Since 2016, Hamilton Heights Darkroom has provided grant-based programming for individuals and institutions.
This is often the first experience youths will have with film, 35mm cameras, and processing in a darkroom.
See below to explore some of our partnerships and community programming.
In May, 2024 Hamilton Heights Darkroom partnered with The Maysles Documentary Center to provide a foundation for their “Teen Doc Authors” program.
Through a grant obtained by the Maysles Documentary Center from the Ralph and Fanny Ellison Trust Foundation, the students participated in workshops at Hamilton Heights Darkroom to learn traditional film photography and darkroom printing, and how traditional photo documentary concepts fit within contemporary forms of media.
The students' work culminated in an exhibit concurrent with the 2024 Hamilton Heights Darkroom Exhibit for the Northern Manhattan Arts Alliance Art Stroll displayed at the Hamilton Landmark Gallery.
Hamilton Heights Darkroom conducted its first workshop for youths in Local Family Shelter Residence in 2016. The most recent workshop was held in July, 2024.
In these workshops, students work with film cameras, process film, make enlargements, and select prints for final presentation and framing.
Hamilton Heights Darkroom is located in the Children's Art Carnival building. HHD collaborates with CAC in a series of workshops for the CAC members and its community.
Members learn how traditional photography works by making photograms, enlargements, and photo experiments, before learning how to mat and prepare their artwork for display.
